Summer is over, the lineups are getting emptier, the swell is getting bigger and you’re thinking about spending a few weeks in a co-living house in Ericeira? A great idea!
Ericeira, the small fishing village that has developed into a thriving entrepreneurial and digital nomad town, is the ideal place for extended stays. And a second home in the form of co-living allows you to settle in.
What better place to relax than by the pool with sea views and surf in our Surf Villa Ericeira?
What is co-living?
Co-living is more or less the modern word for a shared apartment. The biggest difference between these two living situations, however, is that co-living involves mid-to-long-term stays (weeks and months) and the rooms are already furnished. In addition, you share the bathroom, kitchen and lounge areas, and live in a shared household.
Interest in co-living increased immensely during and shortly after the pandemic. Living and working together brings joie de vivre and variety to everyday life. You sit together at the large community table and share knowledge and experience while working and eating together. The half-board or self-cater principle means that you are independent and not tied to any fixed schedule – a “home away from home” so to speak.
Co-living is also a great way to see new places and explore new cultures without the huge commitment of a rental agreement. So if you’ve always wanted to live somewhere else for a limited time, co-living is just the thing for you!
Why is Ericeira, Portugal so ideal for co-living and working?
The fact that Ericeira has grown from Europe’s secret to Europe’s hot spot in recent years brings a number of advantages for travellers.
The once sleepy fishing village is now a lively place full of surfers, creative people and committed freelancers, which means the opportunities for leisure are both inviting and extensive. And to ensure that work is not neglected, there are also hip co-working spaces that allow you to chill on their premises or enjoy numerous café and community events.
Co-working Spaces in Ericeira
Co-working and co-living in Ericeira have become very popular. And now there are quite a few professional co-working spaces with ample work areas, fast WiFi and comfortable chairs.
The best known are The Salt Studio, Kelp coworking and The Base cowork. The first two are very similar in price to each other while The Base is slightly cheaper.
The flexi ticket at Kelp (€120 for 12 days a month) and Salt (€114 for the whole month on a “roaming desk”) or the 5 days in two weeks option (€56) at Salt are, in our opinion, ideal for anyone who wants to work and surf in Ericeira.
This arrangement lets you use the co-working space on bad surf days and work comfortably from our luxurious Surf Villa on good surf days.
Social environment: community and exchange
Want an insider’s tip when it comes to Ericeira? You won’t be alone for long.
The reason we say this is that you quickly get to know new people at various events and activities or simply while surfing in the water.
Numerous self-employed and remote workers are on the move here. And they like to exchange ideas – both about interests and private matters – as well as make professional contacts. Co-living also contributes to making contacts quickly in Ericeira, so don’t hesitate if you plan to travel alone!
The Ocean Sister Ericeira, for example, offers a community for women. There are joint activities such as weekly skate sessions, surfing together, yoga classes or even Portuguese lessons.
The @ericeira.lovers Instagram page also keeps you up to date on current events. As does the Facebook group Ericeira Freelancers & digital nomads, which is where you’re sure to find likeminded people and various freelancers with whom you can exchange ideas and meet for an after-work beer.
Restaurants – Bars – Nightlife
Speaking of after-work beer… Ericeira has no shortage of great restaurants and bars!
While the scene can be crazy, colourful and almost excessive during the active summer season, things are a bit more sedate during the winter months. Nevertheless, there is always something going on and if you want to spend a night out on the weekend because the surf forecast looks terrible the next day, Ericeira is the place for you.
In saying that, we shouldn’t forget that Lisbon isn’t far away and that it’s easily accessible by car, taxi or bus too!
Surfing – skating – yoga – crossfit
Being active is almost an unwritten law of the sea. And as a World Surf Reserve, Ericeira is the place in Europe to go surfing (or at least to try it).
If you’re seeking another activity though, the Quiksilver Boardriders store has a huge skate park and skate lessons are provided. There’s also a gym in this flagship store and people meet here regularly for CrossFit training.
Of course, if yoga, pilates and massages are your jam then Olive3 , Samadhi House or Ericeira Yoga Studio are worth a visit. There are drop-in classes and multi-lesson packages as well as workshops.
