Five Bukit Camps, Compared Honestly

Ask most guides where a beginner should learn to surf in Bali and you get Canggu, Kuta and Seminyak, with the Bukit written off as experts-only reef. That is half right. The famous Bukit waves are reef, and reef is not where you stand up for the first time. But no camp down here takes a first-timer to Uluwatu on day one.

Most of our guests have never surfed. They learn on Baby Padang — the protected right at Padang Padang that runs from whitewater into clean green waves — and on Dreamland's sandy beach break when the swell or tide is wrong. The difference from Canggu is what happens next: once you can ride a green wave, world-class reef is a ten-minute drive, not a day trip.

Bali's Bukit Peninsula packs Padang Padang, Uluwatu, Bingin, Dreamland, Balangan and Green Bowl into a 20-minute radius, and good camps have set up accordingly. Here is how five of them compare. We run two of them, so we have put our own weak spots in writing too.

We are on reef country. Neither camp has a sand beach at the door — Baby Padang is a short drive, and Green Bowl's own beach is down a long cliff staircase. Dinner runs Monday to Friday, so weekends you eat out.

Choosing a Bukit Surf Camp

What are the best surf camps in Uluwatu for beginners?

Rapture (Padang Padang and Green Bowl), Kala, CARI and Padang Padang Surf Camp all run structured beginner programmes on the Bukit, and WaveHouse teaches beginners from its Canggu base. Beginners on the Bukit learn on Baby Padang — the protected right at Padang Padang that runs from whitewater into clean green waves — and on Dreamland's sandy beach break when the swell or tide is wrong. Nobody takes a first-timer onto Uluwatu or Padang Padang proper.

Can a complete beginner really learn to surf in Uluwatu?

Yes, and most of our guests are complete beginners. The famous Bukit waves are reef, and those are not where you stand up for the first time. Your first days are on Baby Padang, Dreamland or Balangan with a coach picking the spot by tide. The advantage over Canggu is the step after that: once you can ride a green wave, world-class reef is ten minutes away instead of a day trip.

Uluwatu or Canggu for a first surf trip?

Canggu has more sand, more nightlife and the most camps to choose from, so it is the easier first week. Uluwatu has quieter line-ups, a slower pace, and reef within reach for your second week. Progress is the same in both as long as the coaching ratio is small — ask every camp for that number in writing.

What is a normal coaching ratio at a Bali surf camp?

Three students per coach is tight, four to six is common, and anything above that is supervision rather than coaching. Rapture and Kala both publish a maximum of 3:1 and WaveHouse publishes 2–3:1. CARI and Padang Padang Surf Camp do not publish a number, so you have to ask.

What does a week at a Bukit surf camp cost?

Rapture starts at €45 a night with meals and surf added on the days you want them. Kala is around €56 a night and CARI around €55, both without dinner. WaveHouse is roughly €100 a night. Padang Padang Surf Camp does not publish rates at all. Prices move with the season — all figures checked 27 October 2026.

Do Bali surf camps include dinner?

Not usually. Of the five camps here, Rapture includes a three-course breakfast and dinner Monday to Friday, and WaveHouse includes breakfast plus lunch or dinner. Kala and CARI include breakfast only. Over a week that is a real difference in both cost and time.

How many days does it take to stand up on a surfboard?

Most people stand in whitewater on day one and ride a small green wave somewhere between day three and day five, with two sessions a day. Daily video analysis speeds that up, because you see the mistake instead of being told about it.
