Surf Lessons & Surf School in Costa Rica
Daily surf lessons on Guanacaste's uncrowded beaches for camp guests and day visitors — warm water, mellow waves, and expert coaching.
Learn to Surf on Costa Rica's Pacific Coast
Costa Rica is a dream place to learn to surf — warm water you can surf in boardshorts, consistent waves, and the unmistakable Pura Vida spirit. Our surf school is based at Playa Avellanas in Guanacaste, a long sandy beach with multiple peaks that's ideal for learning and progressing alike.
From total beginners to surfers wanting to ride the open face with control, our ISA-certified coaches run lessons every day. With offshore mornings and uncrowded lineups, Avellanas gives you the space and the waves to improve fast.
Not Staying With Us? Lessons Are Open to Everyone
You don't have to be a camp guest to surf with us. Our Costa Rica surf lessons are open to external visitors and day guests — whether you're staying in Tamarindo, road-tripping Guanacaste, or just want a session with a professional coach. Book a single lesson, a multi-day package, or private coaching, with all equipment provided.
How Our Surf Lessons Work
Every lesson follows the same proven structure we've refined over two decades of teaching surfers in Costa Rica and around the world.
1. Theory & safety briefing
Before you touch the water we cover the essentials on the beach — reading the conditions, ocean safety, surf etiquette, and the technique you'll focus on that session. Beginners learn the pop-up on dry sand first.
2. Guided session in the water
Your ISA-certified coach is in the water with you the whole time, choosing the right peak for your level, pushing you into waves, and giving real-time corrections so every wave teaches you something.
3. Video analysis & feedback
We film your session and review it together afterwards. Seeing your own surfing is the single fastest way to fix mistakes you can't feel — and to celebrate the progress you've made.
4. Progression plan
You leave each session knowing exactly what to work on next. Stay for multiple days and we build a structured progression so you measurably improve across your trip.
Surf Lessons for Every Level
Whether it's your very first wave or you're chasing your first barrel, we have a coaching pathway for you in Costa Rica.
Never surfed before
We start on the sand with the pop-up, then take you into gentle whitewater on a soft-top board. Most first-timers are riding their first waves to the beach within the first session. No experience or fitness level required.
Standing up, want green waves
You can ride whitewater and want to start catching unbroken green waves. We work on paddle timing, positioning in the lineup, and angling your take-off so you can ride along the face of the wave.
Riding the face, want control
You're riding green waves and want to surf with more flow. Coaching focuses on bottom turns, generating speed, reading sections, and choosing the right board — moving you from surviving waves to surfing them.
Refining & guiding
Confident surfers join guided sessions to the best peaks for the day's conditions, with coaching on manoeuvres, wave selection, and tackling more powerful reef and point breaks safely.

Where We Teach in Guanacaste
We match every lesson to your level and the day's conditions — these are the breaks we use most for coaching.
Playa Avellanas
All levelsOur home break — a long sandy beach with multiple peaks. Beginners learn on the gentle inside while improvers find clean green waves on the outer sandbars.
Playa Grande
Beginner–IntermediateWide, mellow waves inside Las Baulas National Park — ideal for longboarding and building confidence. A short trip from camp for the right conditions.
Tamarindo
BeginnerOne of Costa Rica's classic beginner beaches: wide, gentle, sandy-bottomed waves, 20 minutes from camp. A great spot for first-timers.
Playa Negra
Intermediate–AdvancedA fast, hollow right-hand reef break for our advanced surfers and guided sessions — technical, rewarding, and just south of Avellanas.
The Best Time to Take Surf Lessons in Costa Rica
Costa Rica's Pacific coast works year-round. The dry season (December–April) brings smaller, cleaner conditions that are perfect for learning, while May–November sees bigger, more consistent swells for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Water temperatures sit around 27–29°C all year, so you'll surf in boardshorts every session. Offshore winds are common in the mornings — our coaches plan lessons around the cleanest waves of the day.
Everything Is Included
Every Costa Rica surf lesson includes your board, rash vest, beach theory, in-water coaching with an ISA-certified instructor, and video analysis. We provide the gear — you bring reef-safe sunscreen and the Pura Vida mindset.
Pair your lessons with a stay at our jungle-set Avellanas camp for daily surfing, yoga, great food, and wildlife on your doorstep.
