Surf Lessons & Surf School in Portugal

Daily surf lessons on Portugal's Atlantic coast for camp guests and day visitors — in Europe's only World Surfing Reserve and beyond.

Learn to Surf in Europe's Surf Capital

Portugal is Europe's premier place to learn to surf — consistent Atlantic swells, a huge variety of beach breaks, and Ericeira, the continent's only World Surfing Reserve. Our surf school runs lessons in Ericeira and on the wild Alentejo coast near Milfontes.

With sandy-bottomed beaches perfect for beginners and powerful reefs for experienced surfers, Portugal has a wave for everyone. Our ISA-certified coaches teach every day, choosing the right beach for your level and the day's conditions.

Not Staying With Us? Lessons Are Open to Everyone

You don't need to book a room to surf with us. Our Portugal surf lessons are open to external visitors and day guests — whether you're visiting Ericeira for the day, exploring the coast, or staying nearby. Book a single lesson, a multi-day package, or private coaching, and we'll provide all the equipment, including wetsuits.

How Our Surf Lessons Work

Every lesson follows the same proven structure we've refined over two decades of teaching surfers in Portugal and around the world.

1. Theory & safety briefing

Before you touch the water we cover the essentials on the beach — reading the conditions, ocean safety, surf etiquette, and the technique you'll focus on that session. Beginners learn the pop-up on dry sand first.

2. Guided session in the water

Your ISA-certified coach is in the water with you the whole time, choosing the right peak for your level, pushing you into waves, and giving real-time corrections so every wave teaches you something.

3. Video analysis & feedback

We film your session and review it together afterwards. Seeing your own surfing is the single fastest way to fix mistakes you can't feel — and to celebrate the progress you've made.

4. Progression plan

You leave each session knowing exactly what to work on next. Stay for multiple days and we build a structured progression so you measurably improve across your trip.

Surf Lessons for Every Level

Whether it's your very first wave or you're chasing your first barrel, we have a coaching pathway for you in Portugal.

Beginner

Never surfed before

We start on the sand with the pop-up, then take you into gentle whitewater on a soft-top board. Most first-timers are riding their first waves to the beach within the first session. No experience or fitness level required.

Improver

Standing up, want green waves

You can ride whitewater and want to start catching unbroken green waves. We work on paddle timing, positioning in the lineup, and angling your take-off so you can ride along the face of the wave.

Intermediate

Riding the face, want control

You're riding green waves and want to surf with more flow. Coaching focuses on bottom turns, generating speed, reading sections, and choosing the right board — moving you from surviving waves to surfing them.

Advanced

Refining & guiding

Confident surfers join guided sessions to the best peaks for the day's conditions, with coaching on manoeuvres, wave selection, and tackling more powerful reef and point breaks safely.

The Best Time to Take Surf Lessons in Portugal

Portugal coastline with surf

Portugal has surfable waves all year. Summer (June–September) brings smaller, consistent swells and warm weather — ideal for beginners and intermediates. Autumn and winter (October–March) deliver powerful Atlantic swells for experienced surfers.

The water ranges from about 15°C in winter to 20°C in summer, so a wetsuit is standard — and we provide them free with every lesson. Our coaches plan each session around the cleanest waves of the day.

Everything Is Included

Surfer riding a wave at Ericeira

Every Portugal surf lesson includes your surfboard, a full wetsuit, beach theory, in-water coaching with an ISA-certified instructor, and video analysis. We provide all the gear — you just bring yourself.

Combine your lessons with a stay at our oceanfront Ericeira camp or our Milfontes eco-camp for daily surfing, great food, and the best of Portuguese coastal life.

Surf Lessons in Portugal: FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking a lesson with our Portugal surf school.

Can I take surf lessons in Portugal as a beginner?

Yes — Portugal is one of Europe's best places to learn. Beaches like Foz do Lizandro in Ericeira have sandy bottoms and mellow waves ideal for first-timers. We start beginners on the sand, then guide you into the whitewater.

Do I need to stay at the camp to take a surf lesson?

No. Our Portugal surf lessons are open to external visitors and day guests, not just guests staying with us. Book a single lesson, a multi-day package, or private coaching without booking accommodation.

Do I need a wetsuit to surf in Portugal?

Yes — the Atlantic is cooler than the tropics (around 15–20°C), so a wetsuit is standard year-round. We provide wetsuits free with every lesson, so there's nothing extra to bring or rent.

How much do surf lessons in Portugal cost?

It depends on the format — single lessons, multi-day packages and private coaching are all available. A full learn-to-surf week with accommodation, daily lessons and meals starts from around €500. Contact us for current lesson rates and availability.

What's included in a surf lesson?

Your surfboard, a full wetsuit, a beach briefing on safety and technique, in-water coaching with an ISA-certified instructor, and video analysis afterwards. Everything is provided.

Where in Portugal do you teach?

We teach in Ericeira — Europe's only World Surfing Reserve, 45 minutes from Lisbon — and on the wild Alentejo coast near Milfontes. Both offer beginner-friendly beaches and more challenging waves for experienced surfers.
