Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about learning to surf.

How long does it take to learn to surf?
Most beginners stand up and ride whitewater waves within 1–2 hours. To independently catch and ride unbroken (green) waves, expect 2–4 weeks of regular practice. Progression depends on your fitness, swimming ability, and how often you get in the water.
Can I learn to surf on my own?
You can build foundational knowledge through practice and guides like our free lessons, but at least a few sessions with a certified coach are highly recommended. An instructor corrects your technique in real time, teaches ocean safety, and helps you avoid common mistakes that can delay progress by weeks or months.
What equipment do I need to start surfing?
To get started you need a surfboard (a soft-top foam board is ideal for beginners), a leash, surf wax, and a wetsuit if the water is cool. Our beginner surfboard guide helps you choose the right board for your size and conditions.
Is surfing dangerous for beginners?
Like any ocean activity, surfing has risks — but with proper instruction, a suitable beach (sandy bottom, small waves), and basic safety knowledge, it is safe to learn. Our lessons on surf safety and rip currents cover the essentials every beginner should know before paddling out.
What's the best age to learn to surf?
There is no 'best' age — we teach kids as young as 5 and adults over 60. Surfing is adaptable: board size, wave choice, and technique can all be adjusted to match any fitness level and age group.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer to surf?
You don't need to be a competitive swimmer, but you should be comfortable in the ocean and able to swim 50–100 meters unassisted. Water confidence matters more than speed. If you're still building that confidence, start in shallow water riding whitewater waves.
